Savannah

We stayed at Skidaway Island State Park just south of Savannah.

Savannah is a small city with a downtown area of 1 mile by 1 mile. There are free buses along 2 main routes, so it’s pretty easy to get around. We ate one day at Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room. It’s only open M-F from 11-2, but it’s worth a stop. It’s family-style all you can eat, and I can’t even list all the things that were on the table.

The city has lots of park squares throughout. Chippewa square is where Tom Hanks sat waiting on a bench for a bus in Forrest Gump and told his story. The bench is now in the Savannah History Museum. Below is the movie prop and where it was placed.

We went to see Fort Pulaski. The fort was built to fend off foreign attacks, but ironically was only used during the Civil War. It was surrendered to the Union after only 30 hours of battle.

We heard that lots of shark teeth can be found on the north beach of Tybee Island. We spent hours looking and thankfully right when we were about to give up, Scott found one. It’s a tooth from a 9-10′ sand tiger shark. He also found a nice whelk shell. I had no luck finding anything worthwhile.
