Winter 2024

Bahia Honda

We stayed at Bahia Honda State Park which is a key just south of the 7 mile bridge. It has beaches on both the Gulf and the Atlantic. It’s nice because the wind has been very strong the days we’ve been here, and depending on the direction the wind is coming from, one beach will be windy with rough water, and the other much calmer.

We spent some time in Marathon Key and visited the Turtle Hospital where they rescue, rehab, and then release turtles. If it’s not safe for a turtle to be released, they keep it at the facility or give it to an aquarium.

In 1982 they opened a new 7 mile bridge. We walked the two mile portion of the old bridge, now a pedestrian bridge out to Pigeon Key. Pigeon Key was originally used as the site of a work camp for the Florida East Coast Railway.

We went to Curry Hammock State Park to kayak. The trail started off through the mangroves and looped around to the ocean.
